Less than six months after Boeing and South African Airways (SAA) announced their plans to turn “energy tobacco” into sustainable aviation biofuel, farmers in South Africa’s Limpopo province are harvesting their first crop of a nicotine-free, energy-rich tobacco plant.
The Hadzabe people, a small tribe in central Tanzania, smoke cannabis and tobacco socially. Haja, from Jenman Safaris, filmed this social practice. What amazed me is how long it takes these guys to light their pipes! Read this extract from the National Geographic on how this smoking is performed: ‘It is impossible to overstate just how much… most Hadza (or Hadzabe)… love to smoke. The four possessions every Hadza man owns are a bow, some arrows, a knife, and a pipe, made from a hollowed-out, soft stone. The smoking material, tobacco or cannabis, is acquired from a neighboring group, usually the Datoga, in exchange for honey…. (Each Hadza) has a small amount of tobacco, which is tied into a ball inside his shirttail. He retrieves it, stuffs it all into his pipe, and then, holding the pipe ...
Earlier this year, we launched our company video, We are BAT. The video aimed to show the world what a modern, 21st century tobacco company looks like by shining a spotlight on some of the people who help make us the organisation we are today. One of the stories we heard in the original We Are BAT film was from a sales representative in South Africa, who told the cameras: “I feel like the sky’s the limit on what you can achieve.” And in our follow-up video we hear from two fellow members of our Trade Marketing and Distribution team in Johannesburg, who talk about the opportunities for professional development that come with working for BAT. Through their story, we hope you’ll get a sense of the incredible teamwork, camaraderie and passion that goes into making us a progressive company t...
Africa, a new frontier for tobacco companies, is witnessing a smoking epidemic. These short videos provide an introduction to tobacco use in Africa some of the successes in addressing the devastating effects of tobacco use and the challenges to progress, including tobacco industry influence. These videos were made in conjunction with the African Tobacco Situation Analysis Project (ATSA), an initiative supported by IDRC in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. How B.A.T targets African children with tobacco in order to make them addicts
A look at the competitive and sometimes dirty business of cigarettes. A Zimbabwean tobacco company, Savanna, has recently appointed Nick Hales as its Global Chief Executive. Savanna has made some inroads in South Africa and Mozambique it says , and now it says it's ready to conquer African and global markets. Savanna has often been at odds with big players like British American Tabacco and Phillip Morris with accusations flying both ways. History has been made in Africa's aviation industry. The first passenger flights using bio-fuel have made the trip between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The plane burns organic fuel extracted from a nicotine-free tobacco plant called Solaris. The endeavor is the result of a two-and a-half-year partnership between national carrier SAA, Boeing, and bio-fuel producers SRK-Energy and Sunchem.
There's a raft of potentially extreme regulation waiting in the wings in South Africa. Top of that list is the call from the country's health minister, to introduce plain packaging this year for tobacco products, similar to what Australia introduced.

Travel video about destination South-Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered there, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa’s tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city’s narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa’s most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the city’s past surface mining that gave rise to the country’s massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as the history of Africa’s native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. South Africa is not only impressive due to its size but also due to its amazing variety of fascinating scenery. Its paradise-like flora and fauna plus its historic and famous landmarks are totally captivating. Johannesburg is a modern metropolis and with around a million and a half inhabitants is the capital of Gauteng Province and the largest city in South Africa. It was founded in 1886 when gold was first discovered at Witwater Beach. Although European influence is obvious in South Africa the first inhabitants of this fascinating country were of course the various indigenous people of Africa and the village of Lesedi around twenty five kilometres south of Johannesburg provides many insights into ancient Africa’s traditions and dances. Lesedi contains four tiny villages that are inhabi...

Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
